Two serpent eagles turned over to Ilagan sanctuary

0

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela-Police officials had turned over two serpent eagles to the Ilagan sanctuary in Barangay Santa Victoria in this city on Tuesday here.

The said crested serpent eagles (Spilornis cheela) were caught by a hunter, whose name was withheld, in Andabuen, Benito Soliven town and tried to sell these to passersby but were spotted by the police recently, according to Lt. Col. Eugenio Mallillin, Isabela police intelligence unit chief who represented the provincial office during the turnover.

The hunter then surrendered the birds after police had explained that catching and selling such species are prohibited by laws, he added.

The city sanctuary workers brought the serpent eagles—who usually eat snakes and can be 76-cm long in size–to a large cage as their temporary shelter.

“We will ensure that they will be taken cared of here as we are helping protect the flora and fauna in the sanctuary,” Arvin Perez, acting city environment and natural resources officer and concurrent sanctuary administrator, said.

Prior to the pandemic, the 819-hectare mountain sloped sanctuary, erstwhile known as the Fuyot Springs National Park and a protected area in the country, was used to be a popular natural park for hikers, mountaineers, spelunkers and birdwatchers who come to explore its mountain trails, caves, odd rock formations and aviary. It has a mini-zoo, butterfly park, natural spring water pool, 350-meter zipline, ATV rides but the operations had been stopped due to the government’s temporary closure of tourist spots.

Perez said the serpent eagles would be added attractions to tourists once the pandemic restrictions will be lifted. City records said the park lies near the larger Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park which contains even more diverse wildlife.#

TUMAUINI, Isabela-Two Isabela students represented the Philippines in the recent online International Math Olympiad final round in Thailand and won awards, earning accolades from school leaders and peers here.

Jay Lord Ugaddan was gold medalist while Richdayne Earth Dwight Tumamao was silver medalist. The 17-year-old students are both graduating Grade 12 students of the Regional Science High School in Arcon village here.

Competition records said the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) is an annual international Olympiad competition jointly organized by OCEC from Hong Kong and Thailand Mathematics Society and participated in by 14 countries and administrative regions such as Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Ukraine, Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Taiwan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and other Asian countries.

The competitors had competed in logical thinking, algebra, number theory, geometry and combinatorics.

Ugaddan told this correspondent in an exclusive recent interview that their victories are products of “both hard work and luck.”

Tumamao said they did not expect to win as “no math trainings for international competition are available in Cagayan Valley region.”

Before the final round, both Ugaddan and Tumamao won silvers in the heat round, qualifying them for the final competition. Those who won gold, Silver and bronze awards or with high distinction, distinction or high credit in depth of knowledge assessment had competed for the final round.

“The winning students are laudable for their academic excellence in Mathematics and the school is proud for their feats,” school principal Evelyn Bumanglag said.

“It is a platform to stimulate and foster young people’s interest in learning mathematics, to strengthen the ability of their creative thinking, to widen their international perspective, and to promote the development of primary and secondary education and exchange of educational cultures throughout countries or regions, the organizers added.

Due to the pandemic, the Olympiad—touted as one of the most respected and desirable competitions in the world–was held online.#

By Rose Alluad

TUGUEGARAO CITY-Community pantries had sprouted like mushrooms but some of these have been partly organized by government youth leaders.

In Annafunan East in this city, Sangguniang Kabataan president Gerald Valdez said they had asked for donations aside from their own funds and later put up a community pantry with groceries, bottled water, rice, vegetables and other goods for poor villagers who are in need of help during the pandemic. A similar youth group-led pantry was established in Balzain village.

“Luckily for us, those who have money are helping and we hope to sustain this venture,” Valdez told this correspondent over the phone.

In Camasi village in Peñablanca, Cagayan, villager Pauline Tatiana Custodio-Dela Cruz has shelled out her own money and then got help from civic-spirited fellows in their sub-village. They then put up a table with the goods for the needy villagers who cannot buy food due to lack of money or due to lockdown in Purok 6. The village has ten COVID-19 positive, she added.#
