Workers prepare veggie flower bouquets, which are shoo-in this Valentine's Day, at the Department of Agriculture-Institutional Development Unit on Wednesday (Feb. 12). The vegetable-laden bouquet is an alternative to the flowers and chocolates that usually flood the markets.

TUGUEGARAO CITY- Aside from promoting healthy living, the simple joy of having garden-fresh bouquet of vegetables as gifts to loved ones would be a fitting way to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Cagayan Valley region.

Dubbed as love bouquets full of specially prepared vegetables, buyers would shell out a minimum of P400 to P700, depending on the vegetables, for each bouquet, according to Sheila Marie Orpilla, Department of Agriculture-Region 2 Institutional Development Unit chief in an interview with this Inquirer news correspondent on January 12 late afternoon.

Composed of vegetables such as eggplant, chili, pepper, onion, ginger, and other edible vegetable food, each bouquet “will bring not only simple joy to the receiver but also additional income and contentment to the farmers who produced the vegetables,” she added.

Last year, more than 100 bouquets were prepared and bought on Valentine’s Day alone, bringing income that later served as allowances of on-the-job trainees who worked for the venture. She hoped that the orders would double this hearts’ day.#
