A successful harvest of over 100 kilograms of tilapia marked the culmination of a pioneering aquaculture project at the Magat Dam Aquaculture Park in Ramon, Isabela.

The harvest, conducted on March 12th, was the first from a newly-installed High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) circular fishcage system implemented last year. The project, spearheaded by the Isabela Aqua Agriculture Cooperative (ISAACO), aims to significantly boost fish production through modern aquaculture techniques.

The HDPE fishcage represents a new technological approach to aquaculture, promising increased productivity for local fishermen. Despite challenges posed by climate and other risks, the project has demonstrably contributed positively to the livelihoods of residents. Susana Rivera, ISAACO chairperson, emphasized the importance of collaboration in the project’s success, stating, “This is the start of our cooperative’s progress, and it will continue if we remain united. I ask for the support and dedication of every member. Let’s continue the good work we’ve started.” Atty. Ronaldo Libunao, Head of the Fisheries Production Support Services Division, highlighted the project’s significance, saying, “This fishcage not only reflects the sincerity of our fishermen but also provides our countrymen with the opportunity for a bountiful harvest and income.”

The successful harvest was celebrated by local officials, fishermen, and other stakeholders, signifying the project’s potential as a model for other municipalities nationwide seeking innovative solutions in the fishing industry. The four-unit HDPE Circular Fishcage system is expected to serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives across the country.
