MANILA–The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) declared the lifting of the moratorium on opening new BS Nursing programs to help augment the demand for nurses in the country.
CHEd Chairman Prospero De Vera 3rd said that 201,265 nurses nationwide are needed to achieve the sustainable development goal (SDG) requirement of 27.4 nurses per 10,000 population.
Only 90,205 nurses are serving in the Philippines.
The moratorium was imposed starting Academic Year 2011-2012 due to the oversupply of graduates with over 200,000 nurses with no jobs, the gradual decline in the performance of nursing education graduates in the Nurse Licensure Exam, the proliferation of higher education institutions (HEIs) offering BS Nursing programs, and training for a fee where nursing students need to pay hospitals to be trained and get a certification. #
