TURNING back the Father Time 42-year-old boxer Nonito Donaire outclassed 28-year-old Andres Campos of Chile by scoring a technical decision to become the interim WBA bantamweight title holder at the Casino Buenos Aires in Argentina on Sunday (June 15), wire reports said.
After a two-year layoff, Donaire repeatedly countered Campos with his left hook to score the win by unanimous decision.
The Filipino ring icon dubbed as “The Filipino Flash” suffered a cut in his right eye a minute in the ninth round due to another accidental head butt, leaving his eye almost shut.
When the 12-round fight was stopped, he was leading in all three scorecards, 87-84 (Ignacio Robles), 87-84 (Jose Roberto Torres), and 88-83 (Guillermo Perez Pineda).
With a 43-8 with 28 KOs record, Donaire will be up against the winner of the Antonio Vargas-Daigo Higa title match in Yokohama, Japan on July 30.
Donaire previously lost to Alexandro Santiago and Naoya Inoue in two separate world title fights.#
