TUGUEGARAO CITY––A 90-year-old woman and her 60-year-old son died after a two-hour fire on Sunday, March 20, gutted their house at Barangay Centro Norte in Gattaran town, Cagayan province, authorities said.

Senior Insp. Modesto Macarubbo Jr., Gattaran fire marshal, identified the fatalities as Marcelina and Roger Bernardo.

Macarubbo said the two managed to leave the house when the blaze started to engulf it, but Marcelina went back inside to get their lot title.

When she failed to get out, Roger returned to the house to save her. But fire investigators said both were trapped and charred to death.

Marcelina’s body was found on the second floor, while her son’s remains were discovered inside the bathroom on the ground floor.

The second floor of their neighbor’s house was also partially burned, injuring its occupant, Eleanor Ursua.

Investigators said they were still trying to determine the cause of the fire.#
