The Year of the Snake was welcomed this Chinese New Year 2025 here as thousands of people watched the swirling dance of performers dressed in lion and dragon costumes at two private malls in the afternoon and evening on Sunday (Jan. 26).
The student performers danced like real lions and dragons as they presented the traditional dance, a common event in Chinese culture and other Asian countries where performers mimic the movements of a lion in costume, seemingly bringing luck and fortune.
The performers of the lion and dragon dances pushed their props in their colorful costumes. Because of this, the audience in the areas received applause and cheers of joy.
The Chinese lion dance, performed by two dancers, with one manipulating the head while the other moves at the back. To depict the seasons of courtship and companionship, two lion heads performed during the romantic period.
On the other hand, the dragon dance is performed by several people who hold the long, winding body of the dragon on poles. It is performed by a group of experienced dancers who manipulate a long, flexible giant dragon puppet using poles positioned at regular intervals along the length of the dragon.
