CITY OF CAUAYAN, Isabela — Two men were injured when their van fell into a 200-meter ravine while traveling on the Tabuk-Bontoc-Enrile Road in Sitio Tomyangan, Dupag, Tabuk City, Kalinga, on Aug. 18, police reported.

The vehicle landed along the Pasil River, according to authorities.

Police Major Ruffy Manganip, spokesperson for the Kalinga police, identified the victims as van driver Jerry Mayyon, 44, of Ilocos Sur, and passenger Cesar Marquez Jr., 19.

They were taken to Kalinga Provincial Hospital, where they are currently recovering.

Investigators said the van was traveling from Pinukpuk, Kalinga, to Ilocos Sur when its brakes reportedly failed, causing the vehicle, which was carrying tiles for a housing project, to plunge into the ravine.

During the fall, Marquez managed to jump out of the van’s window, while Mayyon, trapped inside, crawled out after the vehicle came to a stop along the riverbank.

Rescuers from Tabuk City, nearby towns of Lubuagan and Pasil, and other law enforcement units responded to the scene, bringing the victims to safety and later recovering the van from the river.#
